This course equips kids with essential tools to understand and manage their emotions, from recognizing triggers and practicing mindfulness to using strategies like journaling and deep breathing.

Course Overview

This course will help learners to understand what emotions and the role emotions have in our daily life. Basic emotions will be discussed, both positive and negative, and learners will be guided through how to recognize their emotions and consider how emotions influence our thoughts, feelings in our body and our behavior. This course will help learners start to develop ways to start to manage basic emotions and build habits to support adaptive emotional regulation. Learners will feel empowered to start to manage their emotions daily, and will practice basic techniques and problem solving strategies to manage their emotions effectively.

What are Emotions?

This module introduces the learner to managing emotions by discussing what is meant by emotions and introduces basic emotions. This may seem obvious, but it is crucial to help learners understand how to recognize emotions they experience, both positive and negative, in order to acknowledge emotions and start to work on techniques to manage negative emotions in helpful ways. At the end of the module, learners will be introduced to some unhelpful ways that people may manage emotions, and will start to recognize some of the challenges with these unhelpful behaviors.

Managing Everyday Stressful Emotions

This module introduces the learner to managing stressful situations and the emotions which these situations can cause. This module is designed to help learners effectively manage stress through practical strategies. They will learn about situation selection to avoid stressful situations and discover problem-solving techniques to break down challenges into manageable steps, set realistic goals, and find practical solutions. Learners will focus on challenging unhelpful thoughts by identifying and reframing negative or stressful thinking patterns into more positive and realistic ones. By the end, learners will have learned valuable skills to handle stress confidently, make informed decisions, and maintain a balanced mindset.

Managing Everyday Negative Emotions

This module will help learners explore strategies for managing everyday negative emotions to support emotional regulation. Emotions like stress, anxiety, and frustration are common, but learning effective techniques can help learners manage them better. Social support from friends, family, or mentors can provide comfort and perspective during tough times. Deep breathing exercises will be introduced to help learners calm their mind and body, reducing the intensity of negative emotions. Additionally, healthy coping strategies, including techniques like deep breathing and progressive muscle relaxation will be covered, which can help learners manage stress more effectively. By applying these techniques, learners can improve their emotional resilience, making it easier to navigate challenges and maintain a balanced mood.

Focusing on Positive Emotions

In this module, learners will focus on practical strategies to manage emotions and improve emotional regulation. Building healthy habits, like practicing deep breathing or mindfulness daily, helps make relaxation techniques easier to use during stressful times. Learners will also work on goal setting and monitoring, creating specific goals and tracking progress to stay on course. Additionally, setting reminders, such as phone alerts, encourages regular use of these techniques, especially during overwhelming moments. Over time, learners will develop better emotional control and feel more balanced in handling difficult situations.
