Big Feelings, Better Tools: Helping Your Tween Manage Overwhelm

Written by Bloomster Team | Jan 19, 2026 2:37:47 PM

One minute your tween is laughing—the next, they’re slamming their bedroom door. Sound familiar? You’re not dealing with a “bad attitude.” You’re witnessing an emotional system in overdrive.

Tweens feel emotions intensely. Their brains are wired for big reactions, but not yet equipped to always regulate them. The good news? They can learn.

Why Tweens Struggle with Emotional Regulation

The amygdala (emotional center of our brain) is running the show much of the time during the tween years, while the prefrontal cortex (logical regulator) is still under construction.

This leads to:

  • Quick bursts of anger, sadness, or frustration
  • Difficulty pausing between feeling and reacting
  • Shame about “losing control” afterward

3 Ways to Help Your Tween Manage Big Emotions

Name it to tame it.
Encourage them to label what they’re feeling. “Are you mad? Or actually overwhelmed?”

Co-regulate, then self-regulate.
Stay calm yourself—your nervous system can help calm theirs.

Create a “cool-down” kit.
A water bottle, stress ball, or calming playlist can redirect emotional energy.

How Bloomster Teaches Emotional Intelligence in Action

In our course “Emotional You: Managing Your Emotions,” tweens learn how to understand what they’re feeling, why they’re feeling it, and how to handle emotions in healthy, confident ways. Through interactive lessons, they practice:

  • Identifying and naming emotions with more clarity
  • Understanding the situations, thoughts, or stressors that trigger big feelings
  • Expressing emotions in ways that are respectful and appropriate
  • Using simple regulation strategies to calm down, reset, and respond thoughtfully
  • Building emotional vocabulary to better communicate with peers and adults

It’s not about avoiding emotions — it’s about giving tweens the tools to understand them, manage them, and use them to make healthier choices.
