Communication Course Overview

Grab your hiking boots and trail mix! Franki, a young nature enthusiast, is ready to navigate the world of communication. This course offers learners an opportunity to understand different types of communication and how certain settings require specific skills. Additionally, as learners accompany Franki on his adventure, they’ll meet a variety of people who will help him explore the impact of communication, the significance of empathy and assertiveness, as well as how to navigate communication challenges. Finally, since Franki is a digital native, he and his fellow learners will also have a chance to enhance their understanding of virtual communication. Let’s climb!

Effective Communication Essentials

In this section, learners will take a tour through the world of effective communication and its connection to self-confidence, social skills, empathy, and assertiveness. Our main character, Franki, will prepare for a family camping trip and make plans that will allow him to become a better verbal, nonverbal, written, and digital communicator. This section will also help learners reflect on their own experiences so that they can advance skills that they will need all their lives at home, at school, in their communities, and someday in the workplace.

Language and Communication

In this section, learners will explore the relationship between language and tone and how the two work. Exercising flexibility in language and tone is important in promoting self-confidence, social skills, empathy, and assertiveness. Our main character, Franki, will engage in and reflect on experiences that further his skills. This section will help learners comprehend how different people and situations require effective communicators to adapt and respond appropriately.

A communication challenge is any difficulty or obstacle that causes a breakdown between individuals or groups who are interacting. Sometimes there can be a barrier that prevents people from communicating effectively. This can lead to misunderstandings, misinterpretations, or confusion. In this section you will learn communication challenges can happen due to differences in language, emotions, or communication skills and how to address them.

Digital Citizenship and Communication

This section is all about digital citizenship and online communication. The virtual world has become a major part of our everyday lives. Younger generations will never know life without smart devices. The current generation is filled with digital natives who use smart devices frequently, so it's important to understand rules and standards for communication. With help from reliable sources and experienced users, new users can become more educated about appropriate online conduct.

Ashley is an energetic and creative teacher from the United States who has committed her career to facilitating engaging and unique experiences for learners. She has presented at technology conferences, attended international learning summits, and is deeply passionate about ensuring that learning is both fun and meaningful. She has incorporated escape rooms, social media, experiential learning models, and hands-on techniques to engage Generation Z and prepare for Generation Alpha. An avid learner herself, Ashley holds two degrees in education and engages regularly in professional development so that she can build upon strategies and be responsive to student needs.
