Course Overview

This course gives students an introduction to internet safety. It covers phishing, malware, how to safely connect with others online and hacking. Students will learn what to be aware of in order to stay safe online as well as understanding what to do if they experience online dangers. This course gives students the opportunity to practice their decision making skills by deciphering what is and isn’t an online danger and responding to online dangers with appropriate actions. At the end of this course, students should feel confident browsing online and interacting with others online in a safe manner.

Phishing

Phishing emails can be tricky to spot. The effects of opening a phishing email can be damaging. In this module, students will learn what phishing is, the dangers it presents and how to spot a phishing email, in order to keep themselves safe online.

Malware

Malware, or malicious software, is often disguised as something useful to download. In this module, students will learn what malware is, the different types of malware and how to avoid downloading malware. Using the tips from the module, students will learn how to spot common malware schemes.

Hacking

Hacking is a complex topic which involves many different types of hackers, some beneficial and some dangerous. This module introduces students to what hacking is, the different types of hackers, the dangers hacking presents and how to avoid hacking. By learning the common tricks and what to look out for, students can increase their awareness online in order to stay safe.

Stranger Danger

A key way to staying safe online is to always be aware of strangers! Giving out personal information on social media or online can put you in danger. This module will help students to identify common mistakes that people make when giving out information online. Students will learn to identify what constitutes 'too much' information being shared in order to stay safe and increase their awareness of stranger danger online.

Meet Course Creator, Kerry Wadsley

Following a degree in Elementary Education at Penn State (USA), I taught at The Elms School, UK for over 10 years, teaching students from 0-11 years. I taught in Key Stage 2 as well as being the Special Educational Needs Coordinator at the school. In 2016, I gained a Master’s in Education from the University of Nottingham (UK). My passion lies in helping students to achieve their potential and eliminating any barriers to learning. I now run my own business as an Educational Consultant, creating curriculum for schools and educational companies around the world. As a former Division I lacrosse player at Penn State (USA), I love exercise and sports and have taught Physical Education in schools for over 10 years. I love being a part of a team and working towards a common goal.
