Course Overview

Follow along with twin sisters Jenise and Janiya as they learn to love learning! Their journey will teach your child about the fundamental characteristics, attitudes, skills, and actions necessary to become an excellent lifelong learner. They will explore how to become a remarkable self advocate so they are seen and understood; share how to adjust and adapt in adversarial situations and new environments; and how to build confidence, make connections and find new learning opportunities.

 

Module

1

Growing a Growth Mindset

Learners will learn to grow and maintain a growth mindset. First, they will learn the overall differences between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset, with the main characters, Jenise and Janiya. Then, their cousin Layla will teach them the differences between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset. Learners and the twins will also realize how important a growth mindset is to learning, after drawing connections to their own lives and real-world scenarios. Finally, they will learn some tips and tools for practicing and maintaining a growth mindset.

Shooting for Self-Advocacy

Learners will explore what it means to be a self-advocate and how self-advocacy leads to learning. They will begin learning about self-advocacy at basketball practice with Jenise and Janiya. They realize how important it is to understand their feelings and needs. They also learn about the importance of seeking a safe and understanding support system. Finally they explore ways to communicate their needs and feelings with tips and tools for being a great self-advocate.

Adjusting and Adapting to Middle School

In this section, learners will explore what it means and looks like to be adaptable in new situations. Follow along with Jenise and Janiya at school in Ms. Garcia's class when one of them is put in a situation to have to adapt to an unexpected situation. Continue with the twins as they move throughout their school day to learn how being adaptable is extremely important to the learning process. Problem-solving, critical thinking, and resilience can go a long way when learning to be adaptable!

Connections, Experiences, and Learning Tips

In this section, learners will discover the importance of building connections and creating new experiences. They will also uncover some final tips for learning. Follow along with Jenise and Janiya all around their community as they meet new people and make new friends. We will tag along with them to the park, to school, to the basketball court, and the cozy place that they call home. In this section, learners will also realize how our learning can benefit by meeting new people and creating memories!

Meet Course Creator, Jazmine Morales

Jazmine is a passionate educator who is driven to provide a quality, equitable, and meaningful education to her students. She aims to make learning fun and engaging, while maintaining a rigorous and productive learning environment. She has taught an array of science classes, such as Biology, Physiology, Marine Biology, and Biomedical Science.

Jazmine has earned her B.S. in Kinesiology, B.A. in Spanish, and M.A. in Urban Education with an emphasis in Language and Culture. She values and follows teaching practices that are proven through research to be the most valuable and effective for the newer generations of students. She continues to grow as an educator by attending professional developments and community college courses. Finally, she strives to help raise self-advocating leaders who understand the importance in making a difference in the world, for not only those who exist today, but for those who lie seven generations ahead.
