Course Overview

This or that? The neighborhood friends Drew, Payton, and Jordan each have important decisions to make, but they are HARD! They find themselves arguing with their school mates, their siblings, their parents, and each other. Everyone wants to influence them into doing something different. Thankfully, wise old Mr. Arthur is present and observes it all and offers wisdom. In this course, learners will discover what it takes to make responsible decisions around school involvement, relationships, and social media and how those connect to personal morals.

Roadblocks in Decision Making

Responsible decision making is often made difficult by pressures of peers and family expectations. Drew and Payton - the characters in the story - learn this in this section. Drew is very concerned about pleasing his peers, and Payton is worried about meeting family expectations. Additionally, it is hard to understand as an adolescent that you don't know everything about the world yet. Naivety about the world makes it hard to know what you don't know. Blind spots can make decision making feel like a mistake. Jordan and Drew learn about both of these roadblocks in this section.

Recovering From Mistakes in Decision Making

The saying “When you know better, you can do better” refers to learning from life experiences. Mistakes are how you learn! Mistakes can be messy, embarrassing, and frustrating, but if you don't learn from them, it only makes a situation worse! Moving forward in your growth, it's important to know that responsible decision making comes from honoring your values. Poor decisions are made when you don't act based on your values. It's also important to honor what your friends and family value, even if they don't hold the same exact values as you.

How Decision Making Impacts Yourself and Others

Being responsible in decision making is also about considering the consequences. Decisions impact more than just you; they impact anyone involved. Sometimes decisions have a ripple effect and those consequences can extend outward into the future. In this section you will learn alongside Drew, Jordan, and Payton about long and short term consequences and safety in decision making.
