Course Overview

It's time to lead the way! Allison, an eighth grade student, wants to take on leadership roles in her school and community because she enjoys helping others. This course offers learners an opportunity to understand different leadership styles, how to model and demonstrate the behaviors of effective leadership, the importance of communication and collaboration, as well as the importance of having a solutions-oriented mindset. As learners accompany Allison on her journey, they'll meet a variety of people who will help Allison explore the many ideas and skills associated with effective leadership. Let's go!

1

Leadership Essentials

In this section, learners will tour the world of leadership. Leadership is important, demands certain qualities, and each individual brings a unique style based on their inherent traits. The main character, Allison, will prepare to increase her participation in her school's student government. This section will help learners reflect on experiences so that they can improve their definition and understanding of leadership.

Pathway to Leadership

In this section, learners will explore how to demonstrate leadership qualities. This can help them present their skills and therefore be readily recognized as a leader.  Leadership demands hard work, dedication, commitment, organizational skills, flexibility, and reflectiveness. The main character, Allison, will learn from the thoughts, advice, and experiences of people in her life who possess leadership roles, and grow through those opportunities.

Communication and Collaboration

In this section, learners will explore the connection between communication and collaboration and how it relates to leadership. This can help them understand leadership as an opportunity to hone their communication skills and help others work together in order to make progress. The main character, Allison, will learn from the thoughts, advice, and experiences of people who communicate and collaborate often in their roles as leaders or mentors.

Goals and Solutions

In this section, learners will explore the connection between a solutions-oriented mindset and leadership. As a leader, it's important to focus on responsibilities, set goals, reach solutions, reflect and adjust, and regularly engage with others. The main character, Allison, will learn from her first experience in a leadership role as she puts her vision into practice.

Meet Our Leadership Course Creator, Ashley Valentine

Ashley is an energetic and creative teacher from the United States who has committed her career to facilitating engaging and unique experiences for learners. She has presented at technology conferences, attended international learning summits, and is deeply passionate about ensuring that learning is both fun and meaningful. She has incorporated escape rooms, social media, experiential learning models, and hands-on techniques to engage Generation Z and prepare for Generation Alpha. An avid learner herself, Ashley holds two degrees in education and engages regularly in professional development so that she can build upon strategies and be responsive to student needs.
